India-Thailand Military Drill, India-Japan Defence, UP-Japan Investment & Reliance Coal Project

Indian and Thai soldiers are strengthening military ties through Exercise MAITREE-XV, held from August 18 to 31 at Vibhavadi Rangsit Camp in Thailand. The exercise involves 85 personnel each from India’s 9 Gorkha Rifles and Thailand’s 3rd Battalion, 25th Infantry Brigade. Troops are training in counter-insurgency operations, jungle survival, unmanned aerial vehicle use and casualty evacuation. Muay Thai sessions are adding cultural exchange and camaraderie, while trench-clearing and snake-handling demonstrations are improving field skills. The exercise aims to enhance operational cooperation, share expertise and deepen defence relations between India and Thailand.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath hosted Japanese officials during the four-day UP-Japan Investment Meet 2026. He met Yamanashi Governor Kotaro Nagasaki and Japan’s Ambassador ONO Keiichi to discuss cooperation in investment, industry, technology, tourism and culture. Virtual ground-breakings launched two projects worth ₹3,191 crore, including Escorts Kubota’s ₹2,025 crore facility and Minda Corporation initiatives. The projects are expected to create more than 10,000 jobs near the Yamuna Expressway. Yogi invited Japanese companies to make Uttar Pradesh their second industrial home and proposed a 500-acre Japan City near Noida International Airport to strengthen business and cultural ties.

A video showing a tourist arguing with security personnel at the Minamarg check post in Ladakh has circulated online. Authorities routinely restrict traffic in this sensitive high-altitude border region during anti-terror operations, intelligence-led searches, adverse weather, landslides or convoy movements. These measures protect residents, tourists and security forces and do not target visitors. Officials urged people to follow instructions, remain patient and avoid confrontations at security posts. They warned that ignoring operational protocols could endanger lives and compromise national security. Cooperation between the Army, police and civil administration helps maintain safety while allowing tourism and normal life to continue in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

India and Japan have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen bilateral defence cooperation. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Japanese Defence Minister Shinjirō Koizumi signed the agreement during their meeting in New Delhi. Koizumi said Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Prime Minister Narendra Modi had agreed to deepen the strategic partnership. He described defence cooperation as essential to bilateral ties, while acknowledging that relations have not reached their full potential. Citing growing uncertainty in the Indo-Pacific, Koizumi called for faster progress and closer coordination between both countries to elevate defence ties and enhance regional security.

Reliance has proposed a ₹2.73 lakh crore investment over 30 years to build India’s first integrated underground coal gasification complex in Andhra Pradesh’s Eluru district. The project will target 3.13 billion tonnes of hard-to-reach coal in the Chintalapudi and Recherla blocks. It will develop in three phases, beginning with ₹3,000 crore for exploration and a pilot project from late 2026 to 2027. The initiative could create 3,000–5,000 direct jobs and 35,000 indirect livelihoods. It supports India’s coal-gasification mission, strengthens energy security and may reduce imports, although commercial viability remains unproven.
